About Us
Family owned since 1993
Domaine de la Berthète spans some 49 hectares of old vines together with younger plantings to ensure constant renewal of our life-blood on a classic terroir of argilo-calcaire – large pebbly chalk stones over water-retentive clays.
We work the soil, regularly turning the soil in the rows between our vines without the use of herbicides. By respecting the environment in this way, we protect the biodiversity of our region according to the principles expected and demanded of a domaine of HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) status.
Approaching harvest we make regular sorties across our various parcels of vineyards to pick, taste and analyse individual berries to evaluate their ripeness and phenolic maturity. By determining the optimal hang-time for each parcel in this meticulous way, we harvest each over several weeks. On receipt at our winery, all our grapes are destemmed and vinified in traditional Rhône style under temperature-controlled conditions.
For our reds, made principally from Grenache Noir, Syrah and Carignan Noir, our guiding principle is a harmonious balance of all the components to realise wines which are bright, aromatic, fruit-driven, full-bodied and above all typical of their terroir.
Our Plan de Dieu and Sainte Cécile Côtes du Rhône Villages are solely Grenache Noir and Syrah – our Plan de Dieu has typical ‘puissance’, our Sainte Cécile plumes with finesse.
Domaine de la Berthète Côtes du Rhône Blanc is a refreshing assemblage of Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc, where Grenache Blanc brings body and Bourboulenc freshness.
Our Rosés are made by the saignée method, principally Cinsault for our Côtes du Rhône Rosé and Grenache for our Vin de Pays, which is sold under the noble title of IGP de la Principauté d’Orange.
All are wines are estate bottled.
